The Derby Chinese Methodist Church was formed in December 2000. The first service was on Christmas Eve that year, led by Rev John Hodgkinson, a retired minister who was well experienced in Chinese ministry.
The congregation remained small until the arrival of our first full time minister, Rev Kok Kong Yap in late 2009 when it steadily grows to over a hundred of which over forty are under sixteen. Its age group range from the very young to the elderly. They come originally from Hong Kong, mainland China and Malaysia, working in a variety of professions, such as engineering, teaching and the Chinese catering business. The number of Chinese overseas students who attend varies from year to year.
We have regular Sunday worship at Ashbourne Road Church in Derby. The service is conducted in Mandarin with Cantonese interpreting and vice versa. There are also regular, weekly bible study and prayers meetings and active fellowship groups. A weekly Sunday School consists of three group with children at different ages is also regularly well attended.
Following the retirement of Rev Yap, we welcome our current minister, Rev Calvin Cheung who joined us in September, 2020 and is also the minister at Loughborough Chinese Methodist Church.
We look forward to welcoming you.
